Classic Car Enthusiasts Gear Up Or Drive It Day At Glenarm Castle In Aid Of Childline

The Ulster Vauxhall Opel Classic Community (UVOCC) is getting set to go the extra mile on Sunday 21 April in the stunning grounds of Glenarm Castle, when they take part in Drive It Day.

The Day is an event which was created by the Federation of British Historical Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) as an opportunity for historic vehicle enthusiasts and the public to celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial, which was first organised in 1900 to prove the viability of the invention that was the motor vehicle.

It is also a chance to raise awareness and support amongst the public for the historic vehicle movement and keep transport heritage on the roads. Funds raised by the event are donated to the NSPCC’s Childline service.

UVOCC is a Facebook group created by Billy Maxwell, from Ballymoney, to promote the often-ignored classic Vauxhall and Opel cars. The group shares information, attends local classic car shows and charity events as well as holding several outings around the area, all while promoting their cars, some of which are very rare.

Speaking in advance of the event, Ken Smyth, from UVOCC, said: “Our involvement with Drive It Day started informally in 2021 and last year we extended an invitation to the NI Italian Car Club to join us, which added to the enjoyment.

“We are delighted that they plan to support us again in 2024, and I would encourage all owners of any make of classic car to get involved, buy the charity rally plate from the FBHCC website, display it on their vehicles and come along on the day.

“We would ask all car owners taking part in the event to specify UVOCC, as the club involved, when purchasing their plate.

“Our plan is to set off from two venues in Northern Ireland at 10.30am – Billy Maxwell’s group from Lansdowne Crescent, Portrush, and Tom Burke’s group from the Ballymac Hotel, near Lisburn. We will then drive along the scenic Antrim Coast Road to Glenarm and meet at the castle around midday, but if that does not suit, participants can make their own way to join us.

“All funds raised will go to Childline and we are so proud to be able to support this vital service which helps children and young people when they have nowhere else to turn.

The event is definitely not just a day for car enthusiasts, however, as Glenarm Castle is a beautiful and unique location to meet friends, take a leisurely walk, savour delicious meals in The Tea Room or Pizza Pavilion, indulge in some retail therapy in the gift shop and local crafts outlets, or simply enjoy an ice cream from The Milk Parlour while soaking in the wonderful atmosphere of one of Ireland’s oldest estates.

Susan Smith, Community Fundraising Manager at NSPCC Northern Ireland said: “We are incredibly grateful to the amazing support, hard work and generosity from UVOCC.

“We are also indebted to Glenarm Castle for permitting the event to be held in their stunning grounds. It’s going to be a wonderful day out for all the family, and I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the fun and amazing cars, all in the knowledge that the money raised will be helping children in our community.”
